The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) Air Unit successfully guided a plane that had lost power to a safe landing on February 4, 2025.
Just after 7:00 p.m., the SJSO Air Unit was alerted to an aircraft experiencing power loss at 3,000 feet over the St. Johns River. The pilot intended to land at a private airfield but was unable to locate the runway due to a lack of lighting.
SJSO Pilot Casey Kumar and Tactical Flight Officer Stephen Reece responded to the scene. The plane regained partial power at 1,500 feet. The SJSO helicopter used its spotlight to illuminate the runway, enabling the pilot to make a safe landing.
Emergency personnel responded to assist the plane’s crew on the ground. No injuries were reported.
The SJSO acknowledged the assistance of the St. Augustine Control Tower and Jacksonville Approach in providing crucial information to the pilots.
“As part of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, our main mission is to positively impact lives and save lives each and everyday. In an uncommon mission set like this one, we are extremely happy that no one was harmed and everyone went home safe,” stated the SJSO.
