A 53-year-old man was arrested on March 6, 2025, in connection with the murder of his tenant, 32-year-old Aaron Reed, whose body was found on December 15, 2024. Deputies responded to 5131 68th Street North in Unincorporated St. Petersburg at 8:37 p.m. after receiving reports of a deceased adult male.
The 911 caller, later identified as James Butler, told authorities that Reed, his tenant, lived in a detached shed on the property. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Reed suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Butler told investigators that he had no knowledge of who could have harmed Reed, explaining that he had just returned home after being released from jail and found Reed’s body in the living room.
Following a detailed investigation, detectives uncovered evidence linking Butler to the crime. On March 6, 2025, Butler was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
Next of kin have been notified, and the investigation is ongoing.
