Kelly Patrick Ward, 59, has been arrested for DUI and hit-and-run after crashing his vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot.
On Friday, March 21, 2025, at approximately 7:15 PM, a Cape Coral Police Department DUI officer responded to a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Tropicana Pkwy W and El Dorado Pkwy N.
The driver of the other vehicle reported that Ward, driving a vehicle that rear-ended his, attempted to drive away but was unable to and then fled on foot. The reporting party described Ward as a white male wearing a blue shirt and black pants, who had urinated on himself and appeared intoxicated.
Upon arrival, officers found a white truck following Ward, who was located in the 2200-block of NW 8th Ter. Ward, matching the description given by the reporting party, was detained. The keys to his vehicle were found in his pocket.
The reporting party identified Ward as the driver who caused the crash. Ward’s vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, and the airbags were deployed. Officers found open containers of Busch Light and PBR in the vehicle. Ward exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an unsteady gait.
Ward refused to participate in field sobriety exercises and later refused to provide a breath sample.
The other vehicle sustained an estimated $15,000 in damages.
Ward was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail on the following charges:
- DUI
- DUI Property Damage
- Hit and Run Involving Property Damage
