The Cape Coral Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit has arrested and charged multiple juveniles in connection to a series of incidents on February 13, 2025, involving a shooting and multiple vehicle thefts.
The initial incident involved a shooting at 3030 Skyline Blvd., where 12-year-old Brennan Smith reported that his friend, 13-year-old Qwa’miere Preston, had accidentally shot himself. 1 Upon arrival, officers found Preston with a gunshot wound to the back.
Subsequent investigations revealed a complex series of crimes involving multiple stolen vehicles and firearms.
Key Findings:
- Preston had stolen a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander and picked up Smith.
- Video evidence showed Preston and Smith handling stolen firearms and driving recklessly in the stolen Outlander and a stolen Nissan Rogue.
- Preston was shot in the Nissan Rogue, driven by 15-year-old Michael Hernandez, while 14-year-old Antonio Lubin and Smith were also present.
- The stolen vehicles contained firearms also reported stolen.
- Hernandez was found to be in violation of an active Risk Protection Order, which prohibits him from possessing firearms.

Preston, Hernandez, and Lubin were arrested. Smith was already in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The investigation remains ongoing.
