Deputies Shoot Woman Threatening Suicide by Law Enforcement in Clay County

Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies shot a woman on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, after she allegedly approached them with a handgun and pointed it at them. The incident occurred at a condominium complex located at 1717 County Road 220.

Deputies Tyler Elias and Justin Mosley were dispatched to the location following a call reporting a woman threatening suicide, specifically stating she intended to commit “suicide by law enforcement.” The caller informed dispatchers that her friend, identified as Heather Tipton, born on October 10, 1970, was on Facetime with her, holding a gun while making these threats.

Upon arriving at the condominium complex and walking towards the sidewalk near Tipton’s building, the deputies encountered Tipton coming around a corner. She was holding a firearm in one hand and her cellphone in the other.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Deputies Elias and Mosley instructed Tipton to drop her firearm. Tipton reportedly refused, continued walking towards the deputies, raised her handgun, and pointed it at them. In response, both Deputies Elias and Mosley discharged their weapons, striking Tipton twice.

As of the time of the press release, Tipton remains in critical but stable condition. Neither Deputy Elias nor Deputy Mosley sustained any injuries during the incident.

Deputy Elias has been with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for three-and-a-half years, and Deputy Mosley has been with the agency for nearly four years.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will be conducting the official investigation into the shooting in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office. All further updates on the incident will be provided by the FDLE.
