The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released preliminary details and video footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Toledo Road in the San Jose area on Sunday, March 30, 2025, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Alquan Suydam.
According to the JSO, officers responded to a 911 call reporting that Suydam, who had a prior conviction for domestic battery, had punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach while armed with a firearm. This followed a similar report three days prior where Suydam had fled before officers arrived.
When Officers Duhon, Shirk, and Melton arrived at the apartment complex, they found Suydam in the passenger seat of a car. As officers approached, Suydam exited the vehicle and began walking away with his hand in his pocket. Officers repeatedly commanded Suydam to show his hands. Instead of complying, Suydam allegedly looked directly at the officers and raised his right arm, pointing a firearm directly at them.
The officers then discharged their firearms, striking Suydam in his lower body. After falling to the ground, Suydam dropped the handgun he was holding. Officers took Suydam into custody and provided emergency medical care before he was transported to a hospital, where he died.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident to determine the legality of the officers’ actions. Following that, the JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy, and a Response to Resistance Board will convene to submit findings to the Sheriff for final review. The JSO stated this information is being released in the interest of transparency, and conclusions on the incident remain pending.
