Man Shot by Jacksonville Police After Pointing Gun at Officers During Suicidal Subject Call

A 51-year-old man was shot by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) officers in the Sandalwood area late Sunday night after he allegedly pointed a firearm at them and fired.

On April 20, 2025, JSO officers responded to a call regarding a potentially suicidal individual. Upon arrival, they located the subject, identified as 51-year-old Andreas Albert Wetzel, inside a vehicle in the front yard of a residence.

As officers attempted to speak with Wetzel, he reportedly exited the vehicle with a handgun, pointed it at the officers, and fired. In response, the officers returned fire, striking Wetzel.

Officers then approached Wetzel, disarmed him, and provided aid until medical personnel arrived. Wetzel was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The four officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. They have been identified as: Officer Brandon Creighton-Nelson, Officer Katelyn Hrkach, Officer Joseph Neighbor, and Officer Vincent Davis, Jr.

The JSO is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which will be followed by an administrative review. The State Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene to conduct their own independent investigation, as is protocol in such incidents.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the information released is preliminary and subject to updates as the investigation continues.
