A 41-year-old man, Warren Abernathy, has been charged with murder in connection to the death of 49-year-old Kristie Lee Murray, whose body was found in the Marietta area of Jacksonville in July 2024.
On July 6, 2024, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) responded to a call on Pickettville Road where citizens reported seeing a body. Patrol officers located Kristie Lee Murray with a severe head injury, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, and evidence indicated a struggle had occurred.
The JSO Homicide and Crime Scene Units launched an immediate investigation. Based on evidence and interviews, detectives identified Warren Abernathy as the person responsible for Ms. Murray’s death. Abernathy was arrested on the same day Murray’s body was discovered on separate, unrelated burglary charges. He has now been additionally charged with murder and is currently in custody at the Duval County jail.
The JSO stated they will collaborate closely with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure justice for Ms. Murray’s family and friends.
