A 23-year-old man, Sergio Espada, has been charged with Murder in connection to the death of 22-year-old Killian Barnette, who was fatally shot on New Kings Road earlier this month.
On Friday, April 18, patrol officers responded to a call about a person shot in the Lincoln Villa area. They found Killian Barnette lying near the road with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Homicide Unit detectives investigated the incident, reviewing evidence and interviewing two key witnesses. These witnesses reported that Barnette and Espada were involved in a physical altercation before the shooting. Following the fight, Espada allegedly pulled a gun and shot Barnette once before leaving the scene.
Detectives presented their findings to the State Attorney’s Office, which issued a warrant for Espada’s arrest. Espada was apprehended six days ago in Orlando, Florida, and was extradited back to Jacksonville today. He is now in custody at the Duval County jail.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office stated they will continue to collaborate with the State Attorney’s Office in the pursuit of justice for Killian Barnette and his family.
