On April 15, 2025, deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) responded to a burglary in progress on Swallowtail Lane. Residents reported being awoken by a nude male striking their doors and windows with a large wooden branch.
The suspect shattered the glass of a rear kitchen door while the victims hid in another bedroom and called 911. Deputies arrived on scene and took Alejandro Barzaga, 44, into custody. After learning Barzaga lived nearby, deputies proceeded to his residence for a welfare check.
At Barzaga’s home, deputies found clothing and a purse outside, along with an open garage door. Inside, they discovered evidence of a large marijuana grow operation. SJSO narcotics detectives were called to the scene and obtained a search warrant for the residence.
During the search, detectives located three firearms, approximately $85,000 in U.S. currency, 22 pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 3 pounds of Marijuana, 12 mature Marijuana plants, 17 grams of Ketamine, 5.2 pounds of Marijuana edibles, drug ledgers, and drug paraphernalia consistent with cultivation and sales.
Barzaga was initially arrested for Armed Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling and Criminal Mischief. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
