The Lake City Police Department successfully collected 26 pounds of unwanted prescription medications from community members during the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
The national initiative offers a safe, convenient, and anonymous method for individuals to dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired medications, thereby reducing the risk of drug misuse and supporting efforts to combat the opioid and prescription drug addiction crisis. Residents were able to drop off medications in their original containers without removing labels, ensuring ease and privacy. Veterinary prescriptions were also accepted.
Items not accepted at the event included illicit drugs, needles, inhalers, and compressed air cylinders. Local healthcare facilities were also not authorized to participate in the collection.
The drop-off site at the Lake City Police Department was open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Chief of Police Gerald Butler emphasized the significance of community involvement, stating, “Proper disposal of prescription drugs is vital to public safety. Through these efforts, we reduce the chance of medications being misused or ending up in the wrong hands. Every pill turned in is one less that could cause harm.”
