Duval County Man Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder and Selling Stolen Xboxes

A Duval County jury has found James Conyers guilty of Second-Degree Murder and Dealing in Stolen Property, State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced. Conyers now faces up to life in Florida State Prison. Sentencing will be scheduled by the Honorable Judge Mark Borello at a later date.

The case stems from a July 24, 2023, incident at a St. Nicholas apartment complex where law enforcement responded to a call and discovered a man dead in his bathroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses told police that the victim’s neighbor, identified as Conyers, had recently threatened him. Friends also said the victim believed someone had broken into his home and stolen his Xbox. After replacing the console, the second Xbox also went missing.

The day before the murder, Conyers’ girlfriend contacted police to report her car and firearm missing, stating she believed Conyers had taken them. Following the discovery of the victim’s body, Conyers returned the firearm to his girlfriend. Investigators confirmed the gun matched the shell casing found at the scene.

Digital evidence showed that Conyers sold both of the victim’s Xbox consoles to a gaming business shortly after the murder.

The investigation was led by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Brooke Milo and Loana Nardoni.
