Man Arrested for Murder in Southside Jacksonville Shooting

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, around 9:00 PM on Dorothea Road on the Southside.

Responding district 3 patrol officers located 69-year-old Russell Whipple with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD), where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The JSO’s Homicide Unit, along with detectives from the Crime Scene Unit and the State Attorney’s Office, initiated an investigation into the incident. Through evidence review, detectives identified 45-year-old Timothy Cherry as the suspected shooter.

Timothy Cherry has been arrested and booked into the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility. He is charged with Murder and Attempted Murder.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Whipple and affirmed their commitment to working with prosecutors to provide answers and closure in this case.
