Man Gets 7 Years for Crash That Killed Teen at Street Race in St. Petersburg

Carlos Fernandez, 23, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for operating a motorcycle that fatally struck a teenage pedestrian during an illegal street racing event in January 2023.

The sentence, handed down on June 2, will be followed by 13 years of probation.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on January 29, 2023, when a large crowd gathered on 28th Street North near 110th Avenue North for an illegal street race. Among the attendees were 13-year-old Ethan Julio Martin and his father.

According to investigators, Ethan was attempting to cross 28th Street North when he entered the path of a motorcycle driven by Fernandez, who was traveling at over 100 miles per hour. Ethan was struck and killed.

The case was prosecuted by local authorities, who cited Fernandez’s excessive speed and the unlawful nature of the gathering as key factors in the fatal crash.
