Fernandina Beach Parents Arrested on Drug Charges Following Infant’s Death

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Melissa Sue Irons, 35, and Scott Alan Irons, 34, on drug possession charges after their 5-month-old infant child tragically died at a local hospital.

Deputies responded to a residence on S 6th Street in Fernandina Beach on Thursday, June 19, for a cardiac call regarding an unresponsive infant who appeared to have no heartbeat. While en route, deputies were notified that the child had passed away at the hospital.

Upon arriving at the residence, investigators observed a powdery substance commonly used for narcotics consumption on the tray of a baby’s crib, along with other drug paraphernalia found around the house.

A subsequent search of the home revealed a pouch in Melissa Irons’ bedroom drawer containing a purple substance that tested positive for fentanyl. Investigators also found a bag with a substance in Scott Irons’ wallet which also tested positive for fentanyl.

Both Melissa and Scott Irons were charged with possession of a controlled substance and booked into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center. Melissa Irons’ bond was set at $15,000, and Scott Irons’ bond was set at $25,000.

Authorities stated that additional charges could be filed pending the results of the infant’s autopsy.
