GAINESVILLE, FL – Matt Kevin McMillin, 62, of Gainesville, has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device. The arrest on Saturday, July 19, stemmed from an investigation initiated by a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
The ASO & GPD ICAC Task Force served a search warrant at McMillin’s residence at 8435 NW 6th Ave after the NCMEC CyberTip indicated that a user of Dropbox had uploaded and shared an image of child sexual abuse material through their platform.
Detective Montague of the Gainesville Police Department’s further investigation identified McMillin (W/M, DOB: 01-19-1963) as the likely account user. Authorities stated that not only did the Dropbox account point to McMillin, but an associated cloud storage account also revealed similar content.
After being read his Miranda rights, McMillin admitted ownership of the Dropbox account but claimed he didn’t know how the content ended up there. He stated only one other person had access to the account but insisted they were not responsible. McMillin also could not explain how his associated cloud storage account contained similar content. Despite denying possession of the child sexual abuse material, McMillin did admit to previously seeing child sexual abuse material on the internet.
All of McMillin’s electronic devices were seized, and a complete forensic analysis is pending.
The Gainesville Police Department is urging parents to be aware that children are being solicited and exploited through social networking and messaging apps. They advise parents to have age-appropriate conversations with their children about the dangers of the internet and to be vigilant about the social networking platforms their children may access.
