Road Rage Shooting Leads to Arrest in Cape Coral; Juveniles Present in Suspect’s Vehicle

CAPE CORAL, FL – Johnathan Campillo, 37, of Cape Coral, has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle, following a road rage incident where shots were allegedly fired from his truck on Saturday evening. Disturbingly, three juveniles were present in Campillo’s vehicle at the time of his arrest.

On July 19, 2025, at approximately 8:00 PM, Cape Coral Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 4500 block of Del Prado Blvd S. The caller informed 911 dispatchers that a white pickup truck, which had been tailgating them, fired 3-4 shots from a handgun. The victim immediately drove to the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Country Club Boulevard to meet with officers.

The reporting party told officers that while traveling northbound in the middle lane of Del Prado Blvd S, he heard a loud, train-like horn from a white pickup truck rapidly approaching from behind. After he tapped his brakes to avoid a collision, the truck began tailgating him. He then observed the driver, later identified as Campillo, holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his left hand. The victim reported hearing 3-4 loud pops and seeing sparks crossing the roadway, which he believed were gunshots.

The victim sped up to escape, but the truck continued to tailgate before changing lanes and pulling alongside his vehicle. The victim described the driver, a male with dark hair, a beard, and a light-colored long-sleeve shirt, as hanging out of the driver’s side window, shouting obscenities, banging on the truck’s door, and demanding the victim pull over. The suspect vehicle eventually turned left near the 2600 block of Del Prado Blvd S, and the victim proceeded to meet with officers.

Crucially, two other occupants were in the victim’s vehicle: an adult in the front passenger seat and a 3-year-old child in the back. Both adults expressed fear for their lives and the child’s safety, providing a detailed description of the suspect vehicle and its license plate.

Dispatch identified the registered owner of the white 2014 Chevy Silverado as 37-year-old Johnathan Campillo. Officers responded to Campillo’s listed address and observed the vehicle turning onto SE 8th Place from SE 22nd Lane. Upon seeing a marked Cape Coral Police car, the truck paused before continuing westbound on SE 22nd Lane. Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained the occupants.

Campillo was identified as the driver. A black handgun was found in plain view under the driver’s seat. In addition to an adult passenger, three juveniles were in the back seat of the vehicle.

A detective from the Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene. Campillo’s adult passenger told investigators that the other vehicle had “brake-checked” them, causing Campillo to slam on his brakes. She claimed Campillo honked, passed the vehicle, and they continued home, denying that Campillo ever pointed or fired a gun.

However, both the victim and his adult passenger positively identified Campillo as the driver of the white truck, stating they were “100% sure,” despite never having seen or met him prior to the incident.

As a result of the investigation, Johnathan Campillo was arrested and transported to the Lee County Jail on the following charges:

  • Three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (784.021(1)(a) F.S.S.), a Third-Degree Felony
  • One count of Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle within 1,000 Feet of a Person (790.15(2) F.S.S.), a Second-Degree Felony

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) was notified due to the presence of juveniles in Campillo’s vehicle during the incident.
