Jacksonville police have arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with an accidental shooting that injured his 7-year-old brother on August 7. The teen is charged with culpable negligence and tampering with evidence.
JSO patrol officers responded to an apartment on Lem Turner Road after reports of a shooting. They found the younger child with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. Investigators believe the 7-year-old accidentally shot himself. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue transported him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Detectives from JSO’s Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit learned the teen had a firearm hidden in his bedroom without his parents’ knowledge. After the shooting, the teen fled, concealed the gun, and hid the spent shell casing. He was arrested the following day on a warrant and booked into the Duval County Jail.
Police say there is no evidence that the children’s parents were culpable for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
