On Friday evening, deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting a physical disturbance at Cantina Louie in Palm Coast involving an intoxicated man.
The caller described the suspect as an older male wearing a gray shirt and shorts who had swung at another customer before being asked to leave the restaurant.
Deputies were advised the suspect was last seen walking southbound on Old Kings Road North. While searching behind the Island Walk shopping plaza, a deputy spotted a man matching the description riding an electric bicycle. As the deputy followed, the man—later identified as 58-year-old Michael Mahon of Palm Coast—fell off the bike into nearby bushes.
When the deputy approached Mahon and explained he was being detained for investigation of the fight, Mahon became belligerent and argued with the deputy. While the deputy used his radio, Mahon pushed him and tried to flee. Both men fell to the ground during the struggle. Mahon got up and ran but tripped on a service road in the parking lot, where the deputy caught him and placed him under arrest after backup arrived.
Employees at Cantina Louie positively identified Mahon as the man involved in the altercation, and he was formally trespassed from the establishment.
Mahon was arrested on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence. While trying to escape, he sustained cuts to his face, hands, and knees, which were treated on scene by Palm Coast Fire Department personnel. He was then transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.
Further investigation revealed that the electric bicycle Mahon was riding had been reported stolen. After locating the owner, Mahon was also charged with petit theft-larceny. Additionally, Mahon initially provided deputies with a false name but was identified through Rapid ID at the jail. He was subsequently charged with providing false identification to law enforcement.
Sheriff Rick Staly commented, “This guy took a relatively minor incident and turned it into a felony. If you ever lay your hands on a deputy sheriff, I can guarantee that you’ll earn a trip to the Green Roof Inn.”
Mahon remains held without bond at the detention facility.
