In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 10, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Palm Coast involving a gray Toyota. The vehicle reportedly crossed three lanes of traffic, spun out, and crashed into the woods.
Officers located the driver, 30-year-old Michael Antonio Gonzalez of Palm Coast, who declined medical attention. Gonzalez admitted to deputies that he had “drank too much” and could not remember the crash due to intoxication. Deputies noted signs of alcohol impairment, including vomiting, difficulty standing, and a strong odor of alcohol.
A DUI investigation was launched, and Gonzalez failed a series of field sobriety tests. At the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, breath tests revealed blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of 0.168 and 0.173—more than twice the legal limit.
Sheriff Rick Staly commented, “Drinking and driving is extremely dangerous, and this guy is lucky the only consequence was a trip to the Green Roof Inn and a damaged car. He could have seriously injured or killed himself or others on the roadway by making the dangerous decision to get behind the wheel.”
Gonzalez was arrested for DUI and remains in custody.
