JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released preliminary details and video regarding an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Cale Tyler Gilbert on Monday, August 25, 2025.
The incident began around 6 p.m. at Dutton Island Preserve when Gilbert was reportedly firing a rifle into the water. A husband and wife fishing nearby heard the shots and approached Gilbert. According to reports, Gilbert then pointed the rifle at the man and fired shots near his feet.
The couple attempted to leave, but Gilbert, still armed, approached them and asked for a drink. The woman provided a drink while the husband tackled Gilbert, disarmed him, and threw the rifle into the water.
As the couple drove away, Gilbert followed them, sideswiped their truck, and then crashed into another vehicle before hitting a tree.
Officer Soucek was the first on the scene and gave verbal commands to Gilbert. Additional officers arrived, and Gilbert remained barricaded in his truck for about an hour and a half, during which time officers used the public address system to encourage him to surrender peacefully.
At approximately 7:34 p.m., officers observed Gilbert reaching into his rifle case. At that point, Officers Boyster, Rickertson, Yanuzzi, Sapp, Robinson, Soucek, Henning, Ross, and Slatowski all simultaneously fired, striking Gilbert. He died from his injuries.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. JSO will also conduct an internal review. Conclusions are pending.
