A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder after police say he fatally shot another teenager earlier this week on Jacksonville’s Westside.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) announced that Keyon Byrd, 14, turned himself in Friday, just hours after detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest in connection to the killing of 18-year-old Marlon Lane.
Officers were called to an apartment complex on Labelle Street on Wednesday, September 10, where they found Lane suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue but later died from his injuries.
JSO’s Homicide Unit, working with the Crime Scene Unit and the State Attorney’s Office, identified Byrd as the suspect in the case.
“He’s not old enough to drive a car, but he’s facing a murder charge for killing another teenager,” JSO said in a statement. “Our detectives and officers will hold you accountable for violent acts, no matter how old you are.”
The agency urged parents and guardians to stay closely involved in their children’s lives to help prevent future acts of violence.
Byrd remains in custody as the investigation continues.
