18-Year-Old Charged with Murder in May Shooting Death in Jacksonville

Jacksonville police have charged 18-year-old Andre Thomas with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Donte Swan in May 2025.

On May 15, District 4 Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Wheat Road near Ricker Road. When officers arrived, they found Swan suffering from two gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire Rescue transported him to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the JSO Homicide Unit quickly launched a probe into the incident. According to the 911 caller, a group of men had attempted to break into vehicles on the property when Swan confronted them. Thomas, who was 17 at the time, allegedly drew a pistol and shot Swan twice before fleeing with the group.

Detectives utilized resources from the Crime Analysis and Crime Scene Units, along with the Real Time Crime Center, to build a case linking Thomas to the shooting. Their investigation revealed that Thomas had been part of a larger group that stole a car, drove to the location, and attempted multiple vehicle burglaries prior to the confrontation with Swan.

Thomas was already in custody on an unrelated charge when investigators obtained a warrant for his arrest in this case. Although he was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, the State Attorney’s Office confirmed he will be charged as an adult.

JSO officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are working to hold all individuals involved accountable.
