Daytona Beach Woman Fatally Mauled by Dogs After Apparent Medical Episode

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – A 38-year-old woman was found dead Friday evening after what investigators believe was a fatal dog attack that occurred when she suffered a medical emergency inside her home.

Around 7:11 p.m. on October 10, 2025, Daytona Beach Police officers and emergency medical personnel were called to 544 Spruce Street following reports of an unresponsive woman.

According to police, the victim’s boyfriend went to check on her after being unable to reach her by phone. When he entered the home, he found her unresponsive on the floor and immediately called for help.

Officers arrived to find the woman, identified as Monica L. Emerson, deceased inside the residence. Four dogs—a large adult male mixed breed and three of his adult offspring—were loose in the home. Emerson had sustained extensive injuries consistent with an animal attack.

Investigators said the wounds did not appear to result from foul play or human involvement. Preliminary findings suggest Emerson may have suffered a medical episode that caused her to collapse, after which she was attacked by the dogs.

Daytona Beach Police Department Animal Control took custody of the animals, which were later transferred to Volusia County Animal Control Services for a 10-day hold before scheduled euthanasia.

Police said next of kin have been notified, and the investigation remains active.
