JSO Releases Details in November Officer-Involved Shooting of 14-year-old Suspect

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released new information about an officer-involved shooting that occurred November 1, 2025, after the State Attorney’s Office concluded its investigation and determined the officer did not violate the law. Body-worn camera footage, previously withheld at the request of prosecutors, is now cleared for release as the administrative review continues.

According to JSO, the incident began at 6:05 p.m. when the Communications Center received a report of a stolen black Kia Optima. Minutes later, additional calls came in about a hit-and-run and a shooting near the area where the Kia had been taken. Callers indicated the stolen vehicle might have been involved in both incidents. That information was broadcast over the District 1, 5 and 6 radio channels.

At 6:27 p.m., a District 1 lieutenant told dispatch that the vehicle involved in the shooting might instead be a Dodge Durango. That update was shared only on the District 1 channel and was not heard by officers in other districts.

JSO issued a citywide BOLO for the stolen Kia, and notes attached to the alert linked the vehicle to the shooting and hit-and-run.

At 7:44 p.m., an officer spotted the Kia traveling westbound on West 13th Street. The driver turned north on Moncrief Road, then west onto Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. When the officer tried to initiate a stop with lights activated, the driver sped off. Moments later, the stolen Kia collided with a marked patrol vehicle.

After the crash, the passenger, identified as 14-year-old Maurice Knight, ran from the scene. Officer Cahill chased him on foot while ordering him to show his hands. Cahill fired multiple shots during the pursuit, striking Knight. JSO said Knight is in stable condition at a local hospital.

An internal review is underway to determine whether department policy was followed during the incident.
