A stolen vehicle pursuit in Jacksonville ended in a crash and officer-involved shooting Saturday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
The incident began around 6 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in the Brentwood area. An officer located the vehicle near Moncrief Road and 13th Street and began following it while waiting for backup. As additional officers arrived, the driver sped off.
The chase continued toward Myrtle Avenue, where the suspect vehicle attempted to turn but collided with an officer’s car and then struck a nearby building. Multiple suspects jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run.
One officer chased a suspect on foot and repeatedly ordered him to stop reaching into his pants. The suspect did not comply, prompting the officer to fire several shots. The suspect was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Police identified the officer as Jacob Cahill. Another officer suffered a broken nose in the crash, but no other injuries were reported.
This marks the 15th officer-involved shooting this year for JSO. The State Attorney’s Office is investigating, and once that review is complete, JSO will conduct its own internal investigation.
