GAINESVILLE, FL – The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 22-year-old Lorenzo Johnson in connection with a violent incident and carjacking that occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
Deputies were initially called to the 2600 block of SW 75th Street in response to a panic alarm. Witnesses reported a physical altercation between Johnson and a victim, noting visible injuries and property damage. Johnson and the victim left the scene in a black Kia, prompting deputies to begin their investigation.
While law enforcement was responding, the Gainesville Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle at a nearby Wawa on Archer Road, matching the description of the Kia and its occupants. The vehicle had departed before officers arrived, complicating initial attempts to locate Johnson.
According to the victim, a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation. Johnson struck the victim multiple times, choked them, took their car keys, and attempted to steal their car. The victim initially escaped the vehicle at the Wawa and called 911 but was later coerced back into the car. The victim ultimately managed to exit the vehicle a second time and regain control of their keys. Johnson fled the scene before returning to the victim’s residence.
Based on the investigation, deputies obtained an arrest warrant charging Johnson with Battery by Strangulation, Felony Battery (Prior Conviction), and Carjacking without a Firearm or Weapon.
On Sunday, January 4, deputies used real-time intelligence to locate Johnson traveling northbound on Interstate 75 near mile marker 384 in a white Toyota Camry. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted, and Johnson complied with all commands and was taken into custody without incident.
The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office praised the professionalism and persistence of its deputies, noting that their coordinated efforts within 24 hours ensured the suspect’s apprehension and reinforced the agency’s commitment to public safety.
