Toddler Revived After Near-Drowning Reunites With Jacksonville Firefighters

JACKSONVILLE, FL – A 2-year-old boy who was pulled from the water unresponsive in Jacksonville’s Cisco Gardens area is recovering and has reunited with the firefighters who helped save his life.

On February 3, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department B-shift crews from Stations 53, 33 and 36 responded to Pritchard Road for a report of a child pulled from the water. When personnel from Station 53 arrived, they found 2-year-old Hoke unresponsive.

His mother and an off-duty Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer had already begun CPR. Fire rescue crews continued resuscitation efforts and provided advanced life support care while transporting him to the hospital.

During the ride, Hoke began crying, according to the department, a sign that responders said was welcome to hear. Within hours, he was alert and moving without neurological impairment.

On Monday, February 9, Hoke and his parents, Matt and Katie, visited Station 53 to thank the crews.

“These reunions are rare, and they remind us why we do what we do,” the department said in a statement.
