JACKSONVILLE, FL – A 62-year-old man was shot and killed by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers Thursday night after advancing toward them with a knife during a domestic violence response on Fox Tail Lane.
Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said the officer-involved shooting occurred around 10:10 p.m. on February 12, 2026, in the area of Fox Tail Lane.
District 6 Patrol officers initially responded to a domestic violence call involving an armed suspect who was reportedly threatening to kill both himself and his wife. The man had left the scene before officers arrived. After speaking with the victim, officers contacted the suspect by phone. During that conversation, he stated he would not be returning to prison and said officers would have to kill him.
The victim told officers the suspect may have gone to a family member’s home in District 5. Officers responded to a residence on Fox Tail Lane, where they located the vehicle he was believed to be driving.
Officers made contact with the suspect inside the vehicle. After a brief conversation, they asked him to exit. As he stepped out, he grabbed a large knife and approached officers while threatening to have them shoot him. Authorities said officers attempted to create distance, but the man continued advancing while holding the weapon.
Officers W. Morris, G. Griffis and R. Rhoden fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Officers immediately began life-saving measures. The man, identified as Jose Cabrera, was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
No officers were injured.
This marks the fifth officer-involved shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation. Once that review is complete, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
