TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Firefighters in Tallahassee battled a blaze Monday morning that destroyed a historic structure originally built in the late 19th century.
At approximately 7:14 a.m. on March 16, crews with the Tallahassee Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Henry Beadel Drive. The incident initially began as an alarm activation, but a caller arriving at the scene reported flames coming from the roof of the building.
When firefighters arrived, they observed flames on the second floor that were quickly spreading into the attic. The building was a historic residential structure originally built in 1895 on the Tall Timbers Plantation property. Officials said the structure was vacant at the time of the fire.
Fire crews began an aggressive attack on the blaze while also working to protect nearby structures from the spreading flames. During firefighting operations, the second floor of the building collapsed as the fire continued to move through the structure.
Because of the rapid spread through the roof and attic space, the building was ultimately declared a total loss.
Despite the damage, firefighters were able to remove and preserve several historical antiques and items that had been stored inside the building.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Officials believe the fire was likely caused by a lightning strike.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County EMS, Talquin Electric Cooperative, and the Bradfordville Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
