Ocala Man Sentenced to Life in Prison Following Rapid Investigation into Child Trafficking and Battery

MARION COUNTY, FL — A 43-year-old Ocala man will spend the rest of his life behind bars following a swift and evidence-heavy prosecution in the Fifth Judicial Circuit. State Attorney Bill Gladson announced that Donald Ronald Gates III was found guilty by a jury on April 9, 2026, and subsequently sentenced to Life in prison by Judge Barbara Kissner-Kwatkosky.

The mandatory life sentence follows convictions on multiple first-degree felony counts, including:

  • Human Trafficking of a Child for Commercial Sexual Activity
  • Lewd or Lascivious Molestation of a Child
  • Sexual Battery upon a Child 12–18 by a Person in Custodial Authority

Immediate Disclosure and Evidence Collection

The case broke on October 6, 2025, when a student approached a Marion County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer to report a battery that had occurred just 48 hours prior. The victim provided detailed written notes of the abuse, which led to the immediate collection of critical physical evidence, including unwashed clothing and a $100 bill the victim described as a “bribe” or “reward” from Gates.

A subsequent forensic interview at the Kimberly Center revealed a pattern of manipulation. The victim testified that Gates used his position of trust to entice them, promising “more things” in exchange for compliance before using physical force to commit sexual battery in a wooded area.

DNA and Forensic Corroboration

The investigation, led by Marion County detectives, utilized multiple streams of forensic evidence to debunk Gates’ denials:

  • DNA Evidence: A biology report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) confirmed the presence of the defendant’s DNA on the evidence collected from the victim.
  • Digital Forensics: Cell phone records and text messages placed Gates at the exact wooded location described by the victim.
  • Witness Testimony: Detectives located individuals who had helped Gates after his vehicle became stuck in the sand on the night of the incident; those witnesses testified it was “weird” for Gates to be at that location alone with the minor.

“Zero Tolerance” for Exploitation

Assistant State Attorney Katrina Self successfully prosecuted the case, securing the guilty verdict in just six months following the initial report.

“This despicable defendant, who held a position of trust, harmed an innocent child,” stated State Attorney Bill Gladson. “With this sentence, he will not be able to harm another child. I would like to thank the jurors for delivering justice.”
