CROSS CITY, Fla. — A state inmate assigned to a city work crew was arrested after being found with a large quantity of marijuana during a cleanup detail, according to the Cross City Police Department.
The incident occurred the morning of April 30 while inmates were working at Johnny Greene Park. A work squad supervisor reported seeing one inmate attempting to conceal a bag believed to contain contraband.
Authorities said the same inmate was later observed carrying the bag to a trash can near City Hall after the crew returned to the city yard. The supervisor contacted law enforcement, prompting a response from police.
Lt. B. Dorman located approximately 115 grams of marijuana inside the bag. Police, working with the Florida Department of Corrections, then conducted surveillance in the area.
Officers said they observed state inmate Adam Chaplin, 38, retrieve the bag from the trash can. He was taken into custody and charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, a felony under Florida law.
Chaplin was transported to the Dixie County Jail for a first appearance before being returned to the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and emphasized that efforts will continue to prevent illegal drugs from being introduced to inmates working within the community.
