Road Rage Incident in St. Johns County Ends in Shooting

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A road rage confrontation between two drivers escalated into a shooting Tuesday evening, leaving one man hospitalized, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just before 7 p.m. May 5 to the intersection of Palmetto Road and A1A South following reports of a shooting tied to a dispute between drivers.

Investigators said the incident began when one driver pointed a firearm at another motorist. The second driver called 911 and followed the suspect vehicle while providing real-time updates to dispatchers.

Authorities said the first driver eventually pulled over and exited his vehicle to confront the caller. As he approached, he had a holstered firearm visible on his hip and struck the other driver’s window.

At that point, the second driver fired multiple shots, striking the first driver, who was transported to a hospital and remains in treatment.

Officials said no charges have been filed at this time. The Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate and will forward findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review.

“You can’t control other drivers, but you can control your reaction,” said Rob Hardwick, urging motorists to avoid engaging in confrontations.

Authorities advise anyone encountering aggressive drivers to disengage and contact law enforcement immediately.
