A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer was injured Wednesday morning when an armed man wearing a bulletproof vest shot him during a traffic stop near Trout River Boulevard and Ribault Scenic Highway.
At approximately 9 a.m., Officer A.C. Gaulding initiated a traffic stop. When the driver stopped, he opened his car door. Officer Gaulding instructed the man to remain inside, but the suspect began firing at the officer. Gaulding returned fire but was struck in the foot. His patrol vehicle was also hit by gunfire.
Additional officers responded, provided first aid to the suspect, and transported him to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators confirmed the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest and had a second firearm inside the vehicle.
This marks the fourth officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation, after which the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own review.
