Clay County Sheriff’s Office Bailiff Arrested for Grand Theft and Fraud

A now former bailiff with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested following an investigation into allegations of forged military leave documents and fraudulent compensation.

Johnathon Jones, who had been employed as a bailiff, was arrested Monday, April 21, 2025, and charged with grand theft and schemes to defraud. According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began in late March after the agency received information suggesting Jones had been submitting forged military leave paperwork from the Georgia State Defense Force (GSDF).

Detectives learned that although Jones was a soldier with the GSDF, from February 2024 to February 2025 he had submitted false military leave orders for a total of 39 days, during which he was paid $8,115.28 by the Sheriff’s Office.

Further investigation showed that on at least 30 of those dates, Jones was not fulfilling GSDF duties but was physically present in Clay, Duval, St. Johns, and Orange counties. The GSDF confirmed that its master rosters did not list Jones as participating in missions or training on the dates in question, despite his claims.

Following his arrest, Jones resigned from his position at the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. He remains booked at the Clay County Jail as the case proceeds.
