In an update to a case involving the removal of 30 dogs from a Weeki Wachee property, Jose Gonzalez-Cruz appeared in county court on April 14, 2025, and was ordered to relinquish all remaining dogs to Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services. He is now prohibited from owning or possessing any animals.
Gonzalez-Cruz pleaded guilty to citations for unvaccinated animal and unlicensed animal, and no contest to a citation for animal mistreatment.
The two criminal charges of Felony Aggravated Animal Cruelty and Animal Cruelty against Gonzalez-Cruz are still pending.
As previously reported, on March 7, 2025, authorities executed an inspection warrant at Gonzalez-Cruz’s residence on Margot Road due to suspected animal neglect. Investigators found 30 dogs without proper shelter, many with no or non-potable water, and several suffering from being underweight or having open wounds. The dogs were impounded by Animal Services.
Following an investigation, a warrant was issued, and Gonzalez-Cruz was arrested on April 4, 2025, for Felony Aggravated Animal Cruelty and Animal Cruelty. At that time, he relinquished custody of 25 dogs, with the remaining five to be held until a judge determines their future.
Gonzalez-Cruz’s next court date is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7th.
