Woman Rescued from 141 Feet Above River After Clinging to Hart Bridge

A woman was safely rescued late Wednesday night after officers found her clinging to beams beneath the Hart Bridge, 141 feet above the St. Johns River in downtown Jacksonville.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol officers responded to the scene and located the woman, who had climbed over the bridge railing and positioned herself under the roadway. Officers quickly shut down traffic and engaged the woman in conversation while coordinating with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, the JSO Marine Unit, and the JSO SWAT team.

Trained SWAT operators arrived and rigged a high-angle rope and harness system. After more than two and a half hours of communication and reassurance, the woman agreed to put on the harness and was safely pulled back up to the bridge deck.

She was transported to a local hospital for further care.
