LARGO, Fla.—A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with Vehicular Homicide in connection with a May 10 crash that killed three people, including two children.
Adarius Javon Hayes, 20, turned himself in to the Largo Police Department on August 29 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is facing three counts of Vehicular Homicide and one count of Reckless Driving with Serious Bodily Injury. His bond was set at $350,000. Hayes is a player for the Miami Hurricanes football team.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:43 p.m. on May 10 at the intersection of Orange View Drive and Ridge Road. According to an investigation by the Largo Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit, Hayes was driving a Dodge Durango and traveling at a high rate of speed while maneuvering aggressively through traffic.
The investigation, which included witness statements and video surveillance, determined that just seconds before the crash, Hayes rapidly changed lanes across three lanes of traffic. His vehicle then collided with a 2017 Kia Soul that was legally making a left-hand turn.
Data from a search warrant of Hayes’ vehicle confirmed he was traveling at 70.8 mph five seconds before impact and accelerated to a maximum speed of 78.9 mph in a 40 mph zone.
As a result of the crash, two children who were passengers in the Kia Soul were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Kia Soul died from her injuries a day later.
The investigation concluded that Hayes’ “egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions” constituted reckless driving and directly led to the tragic deaths. The investigation is still active and ongoing.
