DUVAL COUNTY, Florida – A jury has found 21-year-old Calvin Ezekiel Mapson guilty of Manslaughter with a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile Delinquent Found to Have Committed a Felony Act in connection with a fatal shooting at a Jacksonville gas station, State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced. Mapson faces up to 30 years in Florida State Prison. Sentencing will be set at a later date by the Honorable London Kite.
The shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. on January 17, 2025, at a gas station on Sunbeam Road. According to evidence presented at trial, the victim had stopped at the store after celebrating his birthday. Surveillance footage showed the victim entering and exiting the business.
Video also captured Mapson and two other men entering the store and stealing items. During that time, Mapson pulled down his mask, revealing a heart-shaped tattoo on his cheek and blue-and-white Nike slides.
After leaving the store, the men became involved in an argument with the victim in the parking lot. Prosecutors said Mapson pulled out a gun and fired five times. Surveillance video showed the victim collapse to the ground as Mapson and another man fled the scene.
The victim was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators relied on surveillance footage, witness statements, physical evidence and incriminating social media posts to identify Mapson as the shooter. Authorities noted that Mapson was wearing the same Nike slides seen in the video when he was arrested months later.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant State Attorneys Erin Wolfson and Katherina Brown prosecuted it.
