Port Orange Man Arrested After Opening Fire On Responding Officer

PORT ORANGE, Florida – A Port Orange man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly shooting at a police officer who responded to a disturbance call at his residence.

On March 15, 2026, at approximately 10:02 p.m., the Port Orange Police Department responded to a reported disturbance at 5243 Orange Avenue. The caller, identified as 46-year-old Blake S. Taylor, told dispatchers that about fifteen unknown individuals were in his yard and requested law enforcement assistance.

When a Port Orange police officer arrived at the residence and approached the property to make contact with Taylor, the officer observed him lying on the ground in the front yard near a large brick planter, appearing to conceal himself in the darkness.

According to police, Taylor suddenly opened fire on the officer. The officer returned fire and was able to prevent Taylor from fleeing the area until additional officers arrived.

Deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Edgewater Police Department responded to assist. Taylor was taken into custody at the scene.

Authorities said neither the officer nor Taylor was injured during the exchange. Investigators recovered a semi-automatic pistol at the scene.

Taylor was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon.

The Port Orange Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing.
