JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released new details and video related to an officer-involved shooting that left a 49-year-old man dead last month.
The incident occurred on March 17 on Bowden Road and resulted in the death of Michael Krause, according to JSO. Authorities say the information released is preliminary as investigations remain ongoing.
According to police, Krause entered a convenience store around 9:16 a.m. Approximately five minutes later, he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at a store clerk. Investigators say Krause demanded that the clerk call police, stating he wanted to die and wanted officers to kill him.
Customers inside the store fled, and the clerk called 911. While still inside, Krause allegedly threatened to exit the store and begin shooting.
Officers arrived shortly after and took positions around the business. At approximately 9:30 a.m., Krause exited the store and moved quickly toward an officer, identified as Officer Cascante, with his arm extended and the weapon pointed in the officer’s direction.
Officer Cascante fired his rifle, striking Krause. He fell to the ground, and the weapon dropped onto the pavement. Krause was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Krause had a prior criminal history that included domestic battery, DUI, drug possession, theft, and discharging a firearm in public. Investigators also stated that had he survived, he would have faced multiple charges, including aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review to determine whether the use of force was legally justified. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will also carry out an internal review to ensure department policies were followed.
Both reviews are ongoing, and no final conclusions have been released.
