ACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage and additional details regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Kline Road East on June 7.
According to JSO, the incident resulted in the injury of 22-year-old Kiyan Atkinson. Authorities said Atkinson has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Person 65 Years of Age or Older and three counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer.
The incident began at approximately 5:58 p.m. when a caller contacted the JSO Communications Center to report that Atkinson had pointed a handgun at an individual during a domestic dispute.
Officers responded to the scene and spoke with the victim and complainant, who reported that Atkinson, who had been living in a shed on the property, came outside and threatened the victim with a firearm.
According to investigators, officers located Atkinson in the backyard and identified themselves before issuing repeated commands for Atkinson to exit the shed.
JSO said Atkinson eventually came outside but continued arguing with officers and repeatedly reached toward a jacket pocket. During the encounter, Atkinson allegedly made statements about shooting first.
Authorities said Atkinson then ran from the backyard toward the street while pointing a handgun at the victim.
Once in the street, officers continued issuing commands for Atkinson to get on the ground, but those commands were ignored, according to JSO.
An officer then deployed a Taser, striking Atkinson. Investigators said Atkinson was still able to pull out a handgun and fire a round toward officers.
Officers Iezzi and Lenn responded by firing their weapons, striking Atkinson multiple times.
After falling to the ground, Atkinson allegedly attempted to reach for the firearm, which had landed within reach. Officers were able to secure the weapon, take Atkinson into custody, and provide emergency medical aid.
Atkinson survived the shooting and was transported for medical treatment.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident to determine whether the officers’ actions were lawful. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal review to determine whether department policies were followed.
Both reviews remain ongoing, and no final conclusions have been released.
