CALLAHAN, Fla. — A man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he pistol-whipped a woman, fired multiple shots at her as she fled, and then barricaded himself inside a Nassau County home during an hours-long standoff.
According to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. on July 4 after a woman called 911 to report she had been assaulted by 33-year-old Caleb Joshua Lopez of Orlando.
The victim told deputies she and Lopez had been at a relative’s home in Jacksonville when Lopez became involved in an argument with a family member and was asked to leave.
The pair then drove to a residence on Jonas Drive in Callahan.
According to investigators, once they arrived, Lopez became enraged and allegedly struck the woman multiple times with a pistol.
Deputies said Lopez then exited the vehicle, giving the victim an opportunity to move into the driver’s seat and flee.
As she drove away, Lopez allegedly fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, striking it at least once.
Following the shooting, Lopez barricaded himself inside the Jonas Drive residence, prompting an hours-long standoff with Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
After several hours of attempted negotiations, deputies took Lopez into custody shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday, July 5, with the assistance of a sheriff’s office apprehension K-9.
Lopez was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during his apprehension.
He has been charged with:
- Attempted Second-Degree Murder
- Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon
- Shooting Into or Throwing Deadly Missiles
His bond has been set at $1,150,000.
