JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 24-year-old man was arrested less than a day after a 47-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed near Beach Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Saveon West, 24, was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Charles Newsome.
The shooting happened Tuesday, Sept. 1, on Saland Way near Beach Boulevard. Jacksonville police officers responded after receiving a report that a man had been shot.
Officers found Newsome suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.
JSO homicide detectives interviewed witnesses and identified West as the suspected gunman, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
With assistance from JSO’s SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals Service, detectives located and detained West less than 24 hours after the shooting.
West was booked into the Duval County Jail on a murder charge.
Police have not disclosed what led to the shooting or described any relationship between West and Newsome.
