Saturday Outing Turns Into Life-Saving Water Rescue for Off-Duty Jacksonville First Responder

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An off-duty Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) firefighter turned a weekend birthday outing into a life-saving rescue after swimming out to save three young boaters stranded in open water off Big Talbot Island, department officials announced.

Firefighter Otto Scherick was off duty and walking a nature trail along Big Talbot Island on Saturday to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday when he heard screams originating from the water. Upon investigating, Scherick spotted three young boaters clinging to the hull of an overturned vessel offshore.

Improvising Flotation and Swimming to Shore

Scherick ran to the shoreline and swam out to reach the stranded victims. Upon arrival at the capsized craft, he determined that none of the three boaters were wearing life jackets.

Evaluating the ocean conditions, Scherick determined that attempting to stay with the capsized vessel presented a higher risk than returning to land. Utilizing improvised equipment, Scherick disconnected the vessel’s portable fuel tank to serve as a makeshift flotation device.

Guiding the three boaters and utilizing the improvised float, Scherick assisted all three individuals through the water back to the Big Talbot Island shoreline. Scherick’s girlfriend captured portions of the rescue on video from the beach.

Outcome and Department Response

All three boaters safely reached the shore without injury and did not require hospitalization.

JFRD leadership commended Scherick for his initiative, situational assessment, and dedication to public safety while off duty:

“Our firefighters never know when their skills will be needed. We’re incredibly proud of Otto. His actions are a reminder that the commitment to serving others doesn’t end when the shift does.”
