Englewood Man Charged With Second-Degree Murder in Friend’s Shooting

A 68-year-old Englewood man faces an Englewood second-degree murder charge after deputies said he shot and killed a friend during an argument inside his home Sunday night.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office arrested Frank John Voight on a charge of second-degree murder, not premeditated. The jail is holding him without bond.

Deputies found victim in garage

Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, October 25, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a man had been shot at 9405 El Campo Avenue in Englewood.

Deputies arrived and found Voight, the homeowner, standing next to another man who lay unresponsive on the garage floor. Deputies cleared the home and found no one else inside.

The victim had an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies started life-saving measures and kept at it until Englewood Fire Department and Charlotte County Fire & EMS personnel took over. The victim died at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office did not release his name.

Explanation did not match evidence

The Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit began the investigation. Detectives found a handgun on a table in the garage.

Deputies took Voight to the District 1 Office for questioning. Detectives said his account of what happened did not match the evidence they had gathered. They then arrested him.

The investigation continues.

Sheriff responds

Sheriff Bill Prummell spoke about the case in the agency’s news release.

“First and most importantly, my heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim. There are no words to ease the pain of losing someone you love, especially in a manner like this. It is sad to see people unable to resolve their issues peacefully, but taking it to this level is unnecessary and ripples far beyond the parties involved. A life is lost and many others are changed forever. This man can think about his actions and those consequences as he now sits in a cell at the jail.”

An arrest and charge are accusations. Voight has not been convicted of any crime.
