GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A 15-year-old Gainesville boy was arrested Monday, October 26, 2026, after investigators discovered suspected explosive-making materials in his bedroom during a joint investigation by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and FBI into his reported communications with ISIS members and supporters.
Jude Sleeper, 15, was charged with making or attempting to make a destructive device after authorities discovered chemical materials at his family’s home in the 9000 block of NW 59th Lane.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, investigators received credible intelligence indicating Sleeper had been communicating with individuals believed to be members or supporters of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, through social media platforms.
Authorities said Sleeper reportedly sought guidance on constructing drones and explosives for a possible attack targeting people inside an unidentified indoor location.
Investigators Discover ISIS Propaganda and Explosive Instructions on Phone
On Friday, October 23, deputies and FBI agents went to Sleeper’s Gainesville residence to investigate the reported communications.
After speaking with Sleeper and his parents about their concerns, investigators received permission from his parents to seize and search his cellphone.
A preliminary examination of the device revealed files containing instructions for manufacturing explosive devices and chemical compounds, along with ISIS propaganda, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators returned to the home Monday, October 26, to conduct a follow-up investigation.
After informing Sleeper’s parents about the material discovered on his phone, authorities received permission to enter the residence.
Mother Discovers Jars Containing Suspected Explosive-Making Chemicals
While investigators were inside the home, Sleeper’s mother alerted them to two jars she had discovered in her son’s bedroom.
When questioned about the contents, Sleeper reportedly told investigators the jars contained different chemical agents intended to make triacetone triperoxide (TATP).
TATP is a highly unstable explosive compound that can detonate unexpectedly.
Authorities immediately evacuated the residence and requested assistance from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Team.
Bomb technicians responded to assess the materials and secure the scene.
After the residence was deemed safe, investigators obtained a search warrant.
Alachua County Sheriff’s Office detectives and crime scene investigators subsequently executed the warrant at the property.
Teen Charged With Attempting to Make Destructive Device
Sleeper was arrested and charged with making or attempting to make a destructive device.
The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are possible as investigators continue examining the evidence.
Authorities described the case as an active and sensitive investigation and said further details would not be released at this time.
