The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will begin high-visibility traffic enforcement across Duval County on Tuesday, November 3, aimed at protecting bicyclists and pedestrians. The details will run through the beginning of May 2027.
Officers will work several high-traffic areas around the city. JSO said the focus is on educating drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, but violations can still bring a warning or a citation depending on the circumstances.
Fatal crashes up from last year
Jacksonville has recorded 33 fatal crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists since the start of 2026. At this point in 2025, the count stood at 31.
Safety tips from JSO
The Sheriff’s Office also listed several ways bicyclists and pedestrians can protect themselves on the road:
- Stay visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at dawn, dusk or night. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing or entering intersections.
- Be predictable: Follow traffic signals, use crosswalks or bike lanes when available, and avoid sudden movements that drivers can’t anticipate.
- Stay alert: Keep your head up. Avoid distractions like texting or wearing headphones that block surrounding sounds.
- Look before crossing: Scan for turning vehicles, check both directions, and confirm drivers see you.
- Use caution around driveways: Vehicles may pull out quickly. Slow down, look for movement and be prepared to stop.
- Be defensive: Assume drivers may not see you. Give yourself time and space in case another driver behaves unpredictably.
Who pays for it
The Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) awarded the traffic enforcement contract that funds the effort, in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation.
JSO did not release the specific locations of the details.
