On May 24, 2024, at approximately 7:10 AM, officers from the Port Orange Police Department responded to an incident at Sugar Mill Elementary School involving a motor vehicle accident with a juvenile pedestrian.
The accident occurred near the entrance of the school when a vehicle, exiting after dropping off a student, struck a female student of Sugar Mill Elementary. Lifesaving measures were immediately initiated, and the student was transported to Daytona Halifax Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Traffic Units are currently investigating the crash. Family members of the deceased have been notified and are receiving support from the Victim’s Advocate Office.
