The incident began when an off-duty JSO sergeant, working security at a nearby construction site, witnessed a man suddenly attack a construction worker with a knife. The injured worker called for help, prompting the sergeant to take action.

The suspect fled, leading officers on a pursuit that ended at Duval Station Road near North Main Street. When approached by responding sergeants, the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Benjamin Kubi, lunged at them with a knife. Despite deploying a Taser, Kubi continued to advance, forcing the sergeants to fire their weapons.

Kubi was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

This is the eighth officer-involved shooting by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 2024. The State Attorney’s Office has launched an independent investigation into the incident, which is standard protocol.

As part of JSO’s commitment to transparency, body-worn camera footage of the encounter is expected to be released within 21 days.
